London: A bill permitting terminally ill people nearing the end of their lives to end their life with medical assistance has been re-introduced in the UK Parliament. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is scheduled to be discussed again in the House of Commons on Friday, September 11.

The bill has been introduced by Labour Member of Parliament Lauren Edwards. Under the proposal, mentally competent adults in England and Wales who are medically expected to die within six months or less will be able to request assisted dying under prescribed conditions and safeguards.

According to the proposal, the application will be examined by two doctors, after which the matter will go to a multidisciplinary review panel. The individual’s wish must be clear, voluntary, and free from any pressure or coercion.

Earlier in 2025, a related bill was passed in the House of Commons by 314-291 votes, but its full parliamentary process could not be completed in the House of Lords due to time running out. Consequently, that bill failed to become law.

The UK government has adopted a neutral stance on the core issue of assisted dying. The future of the new bill will now depend on further parliamentary procedures and voting.
