Washington – President Donald Trump made a large economic promise in an effort to rally support for the Republican Party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

He said that if the Republican Party retains control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, each adult American citizen would receive a payment of $5,000.

Trump made this announcement on 9 September at the Republican Party’s midterm convention held in Dallas, Texas. He named the proposed payment the “Trump dividend” and compared it to a cash dividend paid by a successful company to its shareholders. He also said that the money must be spent within the United States.

However, Trump did not clarify where the funds would come from or under what arrangement the payment would be made. According to available reports, the proposal may require congressional approval. The President does not have clear statutory authority to distribute such a large amount directly to citizens at his level.

With about 240 million adult citizens in the United States, the total cost could be around $1.2 trillion if each receives $5,000. If all adults in the U.S. are counted, the estimated cost could reach approximately $1.35 trillion. Therefore the total cost of the plan could be well over $1 trillion.

The biggest question about financing is where the money would come from. Vice President J.D. Vance later suggested that wealthy individuals could be excluded from the payment and that revenue from customs duties could be used as a potential source. However, experts say that current customs revenue alone would not be sufficient for such a broad payment of $5,000.

The proposal comes at a time when the United States is already facing large budget deficits and a heavy national debt. According to the Associated Press, the U.S. annual budget deficit is about $1.8 trillion and the national debt exceeds $40 trillion. Critics say that if such a large amount is raised through additional borrowing, it could further pressure government finances.

Economists have also raised questions about the potential inflationary effects of such a large direct payment. If millions of people receive a large sum at once and a large portion is spent on consumption, demand for goods and services could rise.

Importantly, the $5,000 payment is not yet an implemented government program. It is a political promise made by President Trump before the election. Eligibility, payment date, financial source and legal process are still unclear. The proposal would need to go through a legislative process to become an actual government payment.

Trump’s announcement came before the November midterm elections. The Republican Party is trying to maintain control of the House and Senate. In his speech, Trump appealed to voters to view the midterm election as if they themselves were candidates in the election.
