WASHINGTON — The US Senate is set to hold a procedural vote on Tuesday to advance a major cryptocurrency bill. According to Reuters, the ‘CLARITY Act’ aims to establish a clear regulatory framework for digital assets. The crypto industry strongly supports the bill, as it is expected to reduce existing legal uncertainty surrounding digital tokens and their regulation.
However, the bill requires 60 votes in the Senate to move forward, and it remains unclear whether it will secure the necessary support. Republican leaders have made revisions in the new draft of the bill to address concerns raised by the banking sector and some Democratic lawmakers.
The bill seeks to clarify which digital tokens will be classified as securities and which as commodities, as well as which government agencies will be responsible for their oversight. Crypto companies state that clear rules could boost investment and the adoption of digital assets in the US.
Meanwhile, the banking sector has raised objections to certain arrangements related to stablecoins. Banking organizations argue that potential benefits granted to stablecoins and their competition with bank deposits could affect banks’ lending capacity. Despite the new draft, banking groups have maintained their concerns.
The bill also includes new provisions regarding the crypto trading interests of officials holding public office. The revised proposal includes arrangements for such officials to divest significant crypto-related financial interests or place them in a blind trust.
According to Reuters, Tuesday’s vote is primarily procedural, but it is considered a crucial test for the future of the legislation. If the bill advances, it could reduce regulatory uncertainty in the crypto industry and potentially boost institutional activity. Conversely, if the vote fails, the Senate has limited time remaining to push it forward this year.
